Mark Twain Elementary, a K-6 school that opened on July 1, 1980, proudly bears the name of one of America’s most celebrated writers, Samuel Clemens—better known by his pen name, Mark Twain.Twain’s literary genius, sharp wit, and keen observations of society have shaped generations of readers and thinkers. Best known for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, his works capture the spirit of curiosity, adventure, and resilience—values we strive to instill in our students.

Born in 1835 in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain’s early experiences on the Mississippi River and his deep love of storytelling set him on a path to becoming one of the most influential voices in American literature. His pen name, “Mark Twain,” was inspired by the riverboat term signaling a safe depth of two fathoms. Like the river that shaped his journey, Twain’s works continue to inspire exploration, learning, and a deeper understanding of the world.

At Mark Twain Elementary, we embrace the legacy of our namesake by fostering a love of learning, critical thinking, and creativity in every student. Just as Twain’s writings challenged readers to reflect on society and embrace new perspectives, we encourage our students to think boldly, dream big, and embark on their own journeys of discovery.
