Mark Twain and Will Rogers elementary schools celebrated students in the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program with special participation ceremonies in September and October, coinciding with Celebrating the Bilingual Child Month and highlighting the importance of multilingual education within the Lynwood Unified School District.
The events recognized the students’ dedication to mastering a second language, spotlighting the inaugural Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes at Mark Twain and TK through sixth-grade students at Will Rogers. The DLI program, which has flourished for 10 years at Will Rogers Elementary, was expanded in fall 2024 to Mark Twain to welcome new students into the bilingual journey.
The DLI program offers a unique curriculum that helps students master both Spanish and English, equipping them with the skills to communicate effectively in two languages. Students develop as bilingual, biliterate and bicultural learners, enhancing their career prospects, boosting cognitive skills and improving social abilities. The program's goal is for students to continue through the curriculum and ultimately earn the Seal of Biliteracy on their diplomas.
Lynwood Unified is committed to helping all students thrive in the classroom and beyond, with DLI teachers committed to the program, its benefits, and the ability to strengthen families and the community. Students bring valuable communication skills back home, whether it’s enabling a Spanish-speaking grandmother to connect with her grandchild or empowering alumni to reach new career heights. Lynwood Unified is proud to foster meaningful opportunities.
