Throughout May, Lynwood Unified families came together for a series of events hosted by the District’s Community Schools team, highlighting the power of partnership to support student well-being and connecting families with resources to help them thrive.
All 17 Lynwood schools collaborated in the monthlong celebration, which offered families the chance to engage with Community Schools staff, connect with local organizations and nonprofits, and learn how the initiative is transforming campuses into hubs of care and opportunity.
The events featured student activities along with engaging workshops for parents covering topics such as “The Road to My Child’s Success,” “Navigating Parent Burnout” and “Community Schools 101.” A vibrant resource fair included shoe and food giveaways and gave families the opportunity to connect with community partners like Wesley Health, YWCA, Hands of Love and over 20 others offering valuable services.
Launched in the 2023-24 school year with the support of a $24.5 million state grant, the Community Schools initiative is rooted in a whole-child approach – blending academics with health services, family engagement, expanded learning opportunities and collaborative leadership, known as the four pillars. The initiative unites teachers, staff, families and local partners to create a supportive network that helps students and families thrive socially, academically and emotionally.
With dedicated case managers, social-emotional learning specialists, licensed clinical social workers and certified student support analysts leading the work, schools can offer essential services such as mental health supports, parent education and enrichment programs. Thanks to the Community Schools team's efforts, families across Lynwood Unified are more connected, informed and supported than ever before.
